Feeling it

I'm so tired, but in a good way!

Back when Kajsa was nursing I had gotten into the habit of eating lots of extra calories, but after she weaned I found it hard to break the habit. Over the course of the next year I'd gained about 15 pounds. Not long after she turned 2 I decided it was time to focus on myself. We joined the Chaska Community Center and I made it a goal to work out 3 times per week. (My insurance also deducts $20 from my gym membership if I visit at least 12 times per month!)

In April, at 136.5 pounds, I began with a 9-week couch-to-5k-type app on my phone and used the running track. Then I moved my workouts onto a treadmill and began interval training with my heart rate monitor. By the end of July I had lost 16 pounds!

In August we went on vacation and I gained a few back, but lost them again over the course of the next month. Last week, in order to add some variety, I fired up the old Wii at home and have been doing both Wii Fit and Wii Active routines on the days I don't go to the gym (and sometimes even when I do). At this week's weigh-in I hit 117!

Wii Fit suggested that a healthy weight would be 112, so right now that is my stated goal and it's admittedly arbitrary. I'll see how I feel when I get there.

In addition to working out, I've been using the My Fitness Pal app on my phone to count calories. Other than the two weeks I was on vacation I don't think I've missed more than a handful of days logging calories in six months. I have also done more cooking, which has helped to provide a more interesting variety so that I rarely find myself in the dieting doldrums.

I found the myfitnesspal app and website extremely helpful. I was approaching 200lbs and wanted to be back down around 180, which I've heard is the ideal weight for my height. It took me around 3 months of purely calorie counting to reach my goal. I'm hovering around 175 now.

Yes, I love MFP! My only complaint is that I wish it would "learn" and not try to correct the names of foods I frequently input -- it keeps trying to change "Applegate" to "AppleCare," even when I've told it 300 times I really mean Applegate!

Good for you for reaching your goal! Did you solely count calories, or did you add activity as well? I'm looking forward to reaching mine and starting to maintain, which will make calorie counting more flexible as long as I keep up the exercise on the side.

If you're still using MFP, add me! (ryner12)

Sorry it took so long to respond. I mostly did just the calories counting with the calorie goals being set by the app. I did enter a few days of activities but only when I did something not related to work.
The only exceptions were when I had to do a lot of walking for work. Like last Friday, where i covered almost 7.5 miles walking and burned over 1100 calories doing it.
I will say that the calories goals were a little hard for me to meet sometimes. At one point I was supposed to be getting around 1800+ a day and just could not meet that goal everyday.
